What are the Nephilim?

2012-11-14 – Ben Jones – What are the Nephalim? – mp3

There are some very strange ideas going around Christianity relating to the nephalim.  If you haven’t heard about it, count yourself lucky… very lucky, because most of Christianity has a complex theory relating to who these “mystical beings” are.  I will only cover a few here.

Author Lauren Kate wrote the book Fallen about an angel who is romantically attracted to and pursues a relationship with a human teenager. In the January 11, 2010 issue of Publisher’s Weekly (PW) on p. 13, Kate claims, “The idea for the book came from a line I read in Genesis about a group of angels who were effectively kicked out of heaven because they lusted after mortal women. I became curious about what the experience might be of a teenage mortal who suddenly became the object of an angel’s affection.”

But where do they actually get it from?  This is what the bible says:The passage Lauren Kate refers to is Genesis 6:1-6…

Genesis 6:1-4 (KJV)
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, [2] That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. [3] And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. [4] There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
The word “giants” is the word nephallim.

AV (1)- Nophah 1; Nophah =”blast”
a place in Moab
h5303. נפיל n piyl; or נפל nphil; from 5307; properly, a feller, i. e. a bully or tyrant: — giant.
AV ( 3)- giant 3;
giants, the Nephilim

Error:

Offspring of angels: A number of early sources refer to the “sons of heaven” as “Angels”. The earliest such references[8] seem to be in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Greek, and Aramaic Enochic literature, and in certain Ge’ez manuscripts of 1 Enoch (mss A–Q) and Jubilees[9] used by western scholars in modern editions of the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha.[10] Also some Christian apologists shared this opinion, like Tertullian and especially Lactantius. The earliest statement in a secondary commentary explicitly interpreting this to mean that angelic beings mated with humans, can be traced to the rabbinical Targum Pseudo-Jonathan, and it has since become especially commonplace in modern-day Christian commentaries

What are “sons of God”?

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

Angels. Or people from unfallen worlds?

Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

Angels. Or people from unfallen worlds?

Job 38:4,6,7 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. …Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Angels. Or people from unfallen worlds?

Can people be sons of God?

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Men

1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God…

Men.

So which sons of God are being referred to here in genesis 6? Angels or men?

God did not order this, and clearly was opposed to it, so if what they were saying was true, it would have to be fallen angles.  Fallen angels by definition would no longer be Son’s of God, because they don’t follow going.

2 Peter 2:4…God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment,

Jude 6…the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

So they are reserved on the earth, and they are bound, meaning limited.

Well there is one limitation that angels have:

Mark 12:23-25 (KJV)
In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. [24] And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? [25] For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.

Angels cannot breed.

And if that isn’t enough, basic logic should tell us the fallen angels cannot breed. Otherwise, why wouldn’t they just breed a super race of angels and kill everyone off. Surely that would be more efficient.

Truth:

The descendants of Seth were called the sons of God; the descendants of Cain, the sons of men. As the sons of God mingled with the sons of men, they became corrupt and, by intermarriage with them, lost, through the influence of their wives, their peculiar, holy character, and united with the sons of Cain in their idolatry. Many cast aside the fear of God and trampled upon His commandments. But there were a few that did righteousness, who feared and honored their Creator. Noah and his family were among the righteous few. – {SR 62.1}

God has placed men in the world, and it is their privilege to eat, to drink, to trade, to marry, and to be given in marriage; but it is safe to do these things only in the fear of God. We should live in this world with reference to the eternal world. The great crime in the marriages of the days of Noah, was that the sons of God formed alliances with the daughters of men. Those who professed to acknowledge and revere God, associated with those who were corrupt of heart; and without discrimination, they married whom they would. There are many in this day who have no depth of religious experience, who will do exactly the same things as were done in the days of Noah. They will enter into marriage without careful and prayerful consideration. Many take upon themselves the sacred vows as thoughtlessly as they would enter into a business transaction; true love is not the motive for the alliance. – {RH September 25, 1888 Par. 8}

The human race yet retained much of its early vigor. But a few generations had passed since Adam had access to the tree which was to prolong life; and man’s existence was still measured by centuries. Had that long-lived people, with their rare powers to plan and execute, devoted themselves to the service of God, they would have made their Creator’s name a praise in the earth, and would have answered the purpose for which He gave them life. But they failed to do this. There were many giants, men of great stature and strength, renowned for wisdom, skillful in devising the most cunning and wonderful works; but their guilt in giving loose rein to iniquity was in proportion to their skill and mental ability. – {PP 90.2}

Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)
Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

  1. On point! Angels do NOT breed. 🙂

    God bless you for addressing this oft misunderstood issue.

    In presenting a lesson on the book of Job, it came upon me the realisation that the sons of God mentioned in Job could have been the representatives of beings in all the inhabited planets in the universe. Satan, as the disputed prince of this world, would have attended that meeting in his capacity as reagent of earth.

    It’s erroneous to always assume that “sons of God” in Scripture refers to angels, as you have correctly pointed out from the Bible.
